Hopefully the pictures speak for themselves. We've had a fantastic first day at on the Isle of Wight. Crazy golf, yummy dinner and a fab time on the beach. The children are looking forward to their day tomorrow at Osborne House and they all send their love. Special mention to Ben P who is turning out to be one of the tidiest boys of his generation and congrats to Felix's table who were always very organised! Oh, and of course, well done to Will who has mastered a very unusual putting technique.

Year 6s keep going!
Hello all!
What a few weeks it has been! We came back after the Easter holidays with even more determination to tackle SATs week head on. And it is fair to say that every single Year 6 child wowed us. The sheer work ethic and willingness to do their best was quite impressive. We all managed to celebrate on the Friday with a picnic in the front garden and a lovely ice-cream (despite the icy winds and glacial rain!).
Since then, the children have carried on working hard on their writing building up their end of year portfolios. Our Maths sessions have also been a success. We are now back as class for Maths and for the last week or so the children have been designing their own Theme Park with a specific budget given to them. We have been quite impressed with their business acumen! Anyone out there with a spare 1/2 a million? Some of our Year 6s are guaranteeing a healthy return (at least 8%) on your investment... :-D
These last few days, the children have also been preparing for their Isle of Wight trip: we have had our "hygiene talk", and we have ordered our first meal so it is all becoming more and more real. What a lovely couple of weeks ahead of us: half term, then a week away, hopefully in the sun...
After half term, a few things will change with regards to homework. We will not be requesting the children to fill out their reading records anymore and we will be making more use of their planners to get the children ready for September. Maths homework will also focus more on investigative skills, and English homework may sometimes be replaced with Topic or Science homework.
Until then, we wish you all a great half term and we look forward to seeing the children raring to go on the first Monday back.

Well done!
Firstly, we would like to say how proud we are of the way the children conducted themselves during assessments last week. With up to three assessments a day, the children worked extremely hard and with a very mature attitude. Well done all! We hope you managed to have a well-earnt relaxing weekend!
Based on assessment outcomes, we wanted to make you aware of our focus rules in spelling up until SATS. We would really appreciate any support you can give your child in revising these rules and being able to confidently apply them to new words. Most of these rules should be found in their spelling homework books. They are as follows:
* The ‘i’ sound spelt ‘y’ other than at the end of words e.g. myth, mystery
* The suffixes –tion, -sion, -ssion and -cian
* Words containing the phoneme ‘ea’ e.g measure, treasure
* Words ending with –gue or –que e.g. tongue, antique
* Words with the ‘s’ sound spelt ‘sc’ e.g. scene
* Words with the ‘a’ sound spelt eigh e.g. eight, weight
* Homophones (please see homework set on Friday)
* Words ending in –tious, -cious , -tial and –cial e.g. confidential, suspicious
* Adding suffixes beginning with vowel letters to words ending in –fer e.g. referring
* ‘i’ before ‘e’ except after c!
* Word containing ‘ough’ e.g. dough, sought
We will be revisiting these in class too but we would appreciate additional support at home if possible. We will be testing the children on these words in a few weeks to see how they have improved.
Thank you ever so much for your cooperation,
The Year 6 team

Update from the Year 6 team
We seem to be having a few technical issues with this blog as a few entries have mistakenly been deleted. Hopefully, you have been getting our updates and emails from the school's office directly too. Anyway...
Finally, with lighter evenings and brighter mornings, it feels like spring is around the corner! Although a welcome change, it does mean that SATS are approaching fast! Consequently, now is a good time for children to start using their 10-minute SATS buster books which many of you purchased at the beginning of the year. Of course, this is not compulsory, but if children feel they would like to do extra revision at home, they can pick and choose the areas they would like to work on and practise in their own time. If they have them, these books should also be brought into school every day from now on, as they can be used during quiet reading time or as extension work.
In English, some children have started writing quest stories, whilst others have been planning Greek myths. During these lessons, the children have been building skills including: use of higher-level punctuation; use of varied description techniques and creating a balance of speech action and dialogue to create an atmosphere.
During Maths, groups are at different points, however, similarly to the SATS buster books, we would encourage children to use mymaths if they would like to do extra revision on a particular topic.
In topic, the children have been exploring democracy and the lives of women in Ancient Greece. It has been interesting to listen to the children’s ideas about how life has changed since these times and give reasons for why our lives are better nowadays.
In Science, the children recently completed their topic on evolution and inheritance. They carried out some excellent research on the theory of evolution, fossils and we even linked this to a short unit on dinosaurs which the children were very engaged in.
We look forward to seeing you on parents evening. Consultation arrangements will be sent out shortly so that you can sign up.

Merry Xmas from the Year 6 team.
The year 6 team would like to wish you all a fabulous Christmas! We have been so impressed by the children's work ethic, exemplar behaviour and maturity this term.
We are looking forward to starting a new term in January and learn all about the Ancient Greeks.
In the meantime, we leave you with our Christmas wishes in the form of a little performance, which, as you will see, took months to practise and master.
Very king regards
The Year 6 team
PS: We would also all like to say a huge thank you for your very generous gifts: chocolates, wine, smellies; they were really appreciated and we felt thoroughly spoilt. Thank you.

Year 6 Xmas Song
Dear Year 6 children and parents,
The end of term is approaching fast which means we are all getting very excited and very busy all at the same time!
Today, the children will have the chance to take part in a Spitfire Workshop making Spitfires out of willow. Photos to follow. The children are also very much looking forward to performing in their assembly tomorrow morning. They made their teachers very proud yesterday with their performance to school.
The children have only been set one piece of homework this weekend and that is to learn the words to their Christmas concert song. I will ask my class, in particular, to be very committed to learning the words and impress me in our rehearsal on Monday.
Thank you all for all your hard work this week Year 6. I am very grateful to my Elder class who I am told have been working very hard whilst I have not been in school. I am looking forward to catching up with them all on Monday.
Have a lovely weekend!
Mrs Renier.

Put those
dreams on a sleigh
I would like to say to you thank you
This old town in winter is so pretty and
Always feel your loving signs running around my mind
when the day I leave this bauble
I'll turn around and remember it all
dreams you worked hard to gift me
A freedom you want to leave me
So here I go Am still scratching around looking in my soul
My body feels young but my mind is getting older
So what do I say?
I can share all the dreams that aren't just mine anyway
Other kids a world away
I can put dreams on a sleigh
I would like to say thank you
This old town in snow is so pretty and
Always feel your caring signs running around my mind
And the day I leave this magic
I'll turn around think back at its fabric
A safe haven you have given me
A winter wonderland to inspire me
So here I go Am still scratching around looking in my soul
My body feels young but my mind is getting older
So what do I say?
I can share all the dreams that aren't just mine anyway
Other kids a world away
I can put dreams on a sleigh

You give me, I can share ,put those dreams on a sleigh

Welcome back!
Welcome back!
We hope you all
had a lovely break over half term and found some time to unwind. We have
another busy half term ahead, including our year group assembly and WW2
fantastic finish event, not to mention all the Christmas (do we dare mention
it?!) festivities towards the end of the year.
In English, we
have started our unit on persuasive speeches. This week the children have had
lots of opportunities to listen to a variety of speeches, including that of
Martin Luther King Jr, and even perform some for themselves. We have been very
impressed by the children’s confidence and ability to engage their audience. We
look forward to sharing some of these with you in our class assembly.
In topic, the
children have made great starts on their Anderson shelters. Thank you for all
your help gathering bits and bobs. Construction will continue next week, when
we will finish painting and start adding final details to the gardens. Again,
we look forward to sharing these with you later in the year.
Just a small request - would you be able to ensure your children have an updated pencil case. Our Pritt Sticks reserves have now run out again so we would be very grateful if you could ensure your child has one in his/her pencil case. Thank you very much.
We hope you have a
safe and enjoyable time watching the fireworks at the weekend! We look forward
to seeing you for parent consultations on Monday.
Miss Clements and
Mrs Renier
